“Looks like you’ve had a rough day already,” a mild voice said minutes later.

Olivia’s eyes flew open.

Noah sat in the chair opposite hers. It didn’t bear thinking of how he had snuck into the house or into the room. He was gorgeous again today in buff pantaloons and a green jacket that made his hair shine like spun gold.

“I missed my morning chocolate,” she said, weary but factitious. Her eyes slid closed. Her head still hurt and she had not slept enough.

“Good god! No wonder you look all in.” Olivia looked positively exhausted to him. Noah hadn’t slept much himself. Every time he closed his eyes he imagined scenarios where the flowerpot was just a little bit heavier or hit just a touch more squarely. He shook off the returned image by taking charge. “I know how dependent on that sludge you are. I wager you haven’t eaten today, either.” He rose and rang for chocolate and a light repast.

“It’s not sludge. It’s delicious. Wonderful. Amazing. Nectar of the gods.”

“Can’t stand the stuff,” he sniffed.

“Good. More for me.” She opened her eyes again. “Please tell me you’re not here about the rumors.”

“What rumors?”

Olivia was too embarrassed to bring up Lymen’s revolting accusations about her and Papa Charlie. Hopefully they had been nothing more than the musings of Lymen’s own depraved mind. “Never mind. Why are you here?”

“Two reasons actually. The first is this.” He withdrew an invitation and handed it to her. “Sorry I didn’t have time to get it engraved.”

She opened it. “‘Lord Noah Troman, third Viscount of Malcross, requests the pleasure of the company of Miss Olivia Wharton and Mrs. Amanda Wharton as his guests for an evening of dining, dancing and fireworks at Vauxhall Gardens on—’” The date listed was today. “A pleasure trip to Vauxhall? Tonight? It’s rather short notice.”

He grinned. It made him look wonderfully boyish and handsome. “Would you like to know who the other guests are?” He didn’t wait for her to respond. “Lord and Lady Blackburn, Sir and Lady Grantham, Sir Geoff, of course and… the Marquess of Durmont.”

Olivia gaped at him. “The Marquess of Durmont? But he’s traveling abroad! I’ve sent letters chasing him all over Europe. Someone told me he meant to spend the spring in Constantinople.”

“No, he’s returned to London. Word went around White’s late yesterday and the papers confirmed it this morning.”

No wonder men wanted to keep women out of their clubs, Olivia reflected. They were hotbeds of information they wanted to keep for themselves.

“So you will come?” He looked so hopeful Olivia had to smile.

“We would be delighted, my lord.” A convivial evening would be the perfect opportunity for her to find out if Durmont had the will or knew where it was.

They grinned at each other, his crystal blue eyes meeting her blueberry-colored ones. A little shiver passed between them. The air intensified. She could see him reaching for her hand.

Noah had been stunned by their kiss the night before. Stunned and pleased, though it had been initiated by Olivia’s confusion after the blow to her head.
